Lighthouse Photo Workshops
Get Ready to Chase the Light
Embark on a one-of-a-kind journey with Lerro Photography’s Lighthouse Photo Workshops. These trips are crafted for small groups of photographers dedicated to capturing the beauty of some of the most remote and iconic lighthouses. Our workshops take you to hard-to-reach locations and guide you in photographing these coastal sentinels in all different types of light, from sunrise to sunset, and as they do the job they were built for beneath the moon and the Milky Way.
If you’re ready to chase the light, push your creativity, and explore where few photographers have ventured, Lerro Photography’s Lighthouse Photo Workshops are your next great adventure.
Charter Boat Rides to Offshore Lighthouses
Did you know nearly one-third of America’s lighthouses stand out in open water, completely unreachable by car? Our charter boat lighthouse tours take you on unforgettable adventures to these hidden beacons of maritime safety. With the help of our experienced captains, we navigate close to offshore and island lighthouses, giving you the best vantage points for sunrise and sunset lighthouse photography.
Unlike crowded ferries, our private charter boats let you get up close and personal with these incredible coastal landmarks. We’ve even landed on remote, deserted islands to capture day and night photos of lighthouses under star-filled skies. Whether you’re a photographer, lighthouse enthusiast, or simply love exploring the unknown, our lighthouse boat tours offer an experience not easily available to everyone.
Night Sessions
Lighthouses were built to shine through the darkness, so it only makes sense to photograph them in their natural setting. Our Lighthouse Night Sessions are designed for photographers who want to master the art of nighttime lighthouse photography.
During our lighthouse night photo workshops, you’ll learn how to capture stunning lighthouse images using moonlight, starlight, and creative fill light techniques. We’ll teach you how to balance natural and artificial light to create dramatic, long-exposure images that showcase the lighthouse in its true nocturnal beauty.
Participants will also discover how to photograph lighthouses with the Milky Way, using advanced astrophotography techniques to highlight both the structure and the night sky. To ensure optimal shooting conditions, we often turn off exterior and interior building lights, allowing you to work with the pure glow of the night.
Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting your journey into night and astrophotography, this workshop offers hands-on guidance, expert tips, and unforgettable coastal photo opportunities.
Lighthouse Keeper Photo Shoot
Step back in time to the early 1900s and experience the life of a lighthouse keeper, who was the true heart and soul of the lighthouse. Without the keeper and his family willing to live and work in remote, isolated or inaccessible locations, the light would never have shone to guide sailors safely home.
Our authentic 1900s-era reproduction keeper uniform adds a human element to the lighthouse photographs. Using vintage-style props such as a lantern and spyglass, we’ll capture the essence of a keeper tending to his daily duties, maintaining the light, and watching over the sea.
This session combines striking portraits of the lighthouse and its keeper with storytelling imagery, bringing history to life through the lens.
Special Access
Some lighthouses are off-limits after sunset or sit on private land inaccessible to the general public. During our photo workshops, we secure special permits that provide rare, after-hours access to these remarkable locations, giving you the opportunity to capture stunning lighthouse images that few others ever can.
Lighthouse Lantern Lightings
Each year, a number of historic lighthouses are decommissioned and their beacons go dark. In collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard and lighthouse owners, we organize special Lens Lighting photo sessions; unique opportunities to relight these historic lenses and capture images that can no longer be taken once the lights are extinguished.
Join us as we help preserve maritime history by bringing these magnificent structures back to life, if only for one more night.
