White Pass and Yukon Route

September 24-25, 2025 | Skagway, Alaska

Join Lerro Photography as we spend two full days on one of the most scenic railroads in the world: The White Pass and Yukon Route in southern Alaska, northwestern British Columbia, and southern Yukon Territory, Canada. Because of how quickly our first charter sold out, we are now offering two more photo charter days.

The motive power for our charter will be WP&YR 2-8-2 #73, custom built by Baldwin for the White Pass & Yukon Route in 1947. During our charter, #73 will pull vintage passenger cars across 60 miles of incredible scenery. The steam locomotive will operate without its auxiliary tender, providing an even rarer opportunity to photograph an authentic WP&YR consist.

The line from Skagway, AK to Carcross, YT traverses numerous bridges, miles of river running, open fields with mountains in the background, and even a few tunnels. Most of the line is not accessible by road so this amazing railroad is very hard to photograph and/or chase. By late September, the cruise ship season is mostly finished in Skagway, so we will have very few opposing trains out on the railroad.

Our photo train will have two crews each day allowing us to spend all day out on the line. We’ll also run a night photo session on one of the nights. In order to maximize our time at the best photo locations, we’ll emphasize a different section of track each day.

The photo charter will be limited to approximately 40 photographers.

Traveling to the Photo Charter:

Our charter will start and end in Skagway, AK each day. Because of Skagway’s isolation, the best way to reach Skagway is to fly into Whitehorse, YT and then drive two and a half hours south to Skagway, AK. You MUST have a passport in order to attend the photo charter since we will be crossing back and forth between the USA and Canada each day. Participants who sign up will be sent a list of recommended hotels that offer good rates and have a restaurant attached to the hotel.

If you are interested in being paired up with a travel companion to help share the rental car and hotel room expenses, I can put you in contact with someone.
