White Pass & Yukon Route Photo Charter

Join Lerro Photography as we spend three full days on one of the most scenic railroads in the world: The White Pass & Yukon Route in southern Alaska, northwestern British Columbia, and southern Yukon Territory, Canada. After the huge success of our 2025 photo charters, we are going back again. This time, however, we’re hoping to add snow to enhance our scenic photo locations.
Wp&YR 2-8-2 #73
The motive power for our charter will be White Pass & Yukon Route 2-8-2 #73, custom-built by Baldwin for the railroad in 1947. During our charter, WP&YR #73 will pull vintage passenger cars through 60 miles of incredible scenery. The steam locomotive will operate without its auxiliary tender, providing an even rarer opportunity to photograph an authentic WP&YR consist.
ABOUT THE PHOTO CHARTER
The line from Skagway, AK to Carcross, YT traverses numerous bridges, miles of river running, open fields with mountains in the background, and even two tunnels. Almost the entire line is inaccessible by road, so this amazing railroad is extremely hard to photograph and/or chase.
Our photo train will have two crews each day, allowing us to spend all day out on the line. In order to maximize our time at the best photo locations, we will emphasize a different section of track each day. The dates of our charter have been chosen to avoid the busy cruise ship season, so we will have plenty of photo time each day.
ABOUT THE PHOTO CHARTER
Traveling to Skagway:
Our charter will start and end in Skagway, AK each day. Because of our early departure times, your hotel reservations need to be in Skagway to avoid issues with the border inspection station’s hours of operation. Because of Skagway’s isolation, there are two preferred ways to get there:
Option 1: Fly into Whitehorse, YT and then drive two and a half hours south to Skagway, AK.
Option 2: Fly into Juneau, AK and take the 7-hour Alaska Marine Highway Ferry.
Important: You MUST have a passport in order to attend the photo charter since we will be crossing back and forth between the USA and Canada each day. Also, you cannot have any felonies on your record, including DUIs. Canada will deny your entry, even for a past DUI.
About the photo charter
Snowshoes: Because of the high probability of significant snow at White Pass, everyone will be required to have snowshoes. We are in the process of working with local vendors to get a rate for snowshoe rentals. Additional info on that will be provided in the future. Snowshoe rentals are not included with the charter ticket price.
