Yellowstone National Park Photo Workshop

January 24 – February 1, 2027
West Yellowstone, MT & Jackson, WY

Join Lerro Photography for an unforgettable journey as we delve into the breathtaking wilderness and stunning beauty of Yellowstone National Park during the tranquil winter months. Known worldwide for its unique geothermal features, majestic rivers, deep canyons, lush forests, and diverse wildlife, Yellowstone presents itself as a photographer’s paradise, offering a plethora of opportunities to capture nature’s wonders.

In winter, access to the majority of the park is limited as most roads are closed to regular vehicles. The most effective way to experience the park during this season is via snow coach or snowmobile. For our exclusive photo workshop, we have arranged for a private snow coach to be at our disposal, allowing for a personalized exploration where we can photograph at our own pace and immerse ourselves in the stunning landscapes that captivate our group’s interest. We’ve secured our snow coach for a generous ten hours each day—significantly more than the typical eight-hour commercial tours—ensuring that we have ample time to explore iconic sites and less-visited gems alike. This extra time will enable us to fully appreciate the serene beauty of winter, including the magical moments of sunset in the park, before making our way back to West Yellowstone.

Additionally, this remarkable photo workshop is scheduled in conjunction with our Grand Teton Photo Workshop from February 2-4, 2026, providing a unique opportunity to experience two of America’s most stunning national parks in one unforgettable photographic adventure. Join us as we create lasting memories and capture remarkable images in one of the country’s most iconic natural landscapes.

January 25: Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone

Our winter Yellowstone adventure will be packed full of wildlife, and we’re going to get started right in town in West Yellowstone. The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center gives a home to bears and wolves that couldn’t survive in the wild for various reasons. It also gives us a great opportunity to get into the groove of shooting animals in the conditions here. We’ll spend the day photographing a number of grizzly bears and two packs of wolves at the preserve. During this session, photographers will learn how to use various autofocus tracking settings and how to have their other camera settings ready. That way, when we are in the park the next few days, everyone will be comfortable with their cameras and ready to get those iconic Yellowstone photos.

January 26-27: YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK PRIVATE SNOW COACH

We’ll spend two adventurous days in our private snow coach traveling around Yellowstone in search of wildlife and photographing numerous landscape locations. We contract our private snow coaches for ten hours each day, which allows us to enjoy all of the winter sunlight and head back to West Yellowstone at blue hour. Other tours have to be back by 4:00 PM, and miss out on these fantastic golden hour photos in the park. Our snow coach driver will have the most recent updates on where the wildlife is to get us right where we want to be. Our landscape locations will correspond with optimum sun angles.

Some of the wildlife we hope to see include:

  • Coyotes
  • Bison
  • Eagles
  • River Otters
  • Elk

Photo Locations:

  • Hayden Valley
  • Madison River
  • Gibbon Falls
  • Grand Canyon
  • Lower Geyser Basin
  • Midway Geyser Basin
  • Upper Geysers Basin

We will make a stop timed to photograph an Old Faithful eruption.

January 28-29 - Grand Teton National Park

During the winter, the wildlife of Grand Teton is still prevalent and active. During our photo workshop, we hope to photograph the following wildlife:

  • Moose
  • Coyotes
  • Bison
  • Eagles
  • Elk
  • Big Horn Sheep

January 27 - Travel to Jackson, WY - Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park’s landscape is characterized by the dramatic Teton Range, rising abruptly from Jackson Hole, and shaped by millions of years of geological activity, including tectonic uplift, glacial carving, and erosion.

Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park, famous for its iconic landscape featuring barns against the Teton Range, is a historic district showcasing the settlement of Mormon pioneers in Jackson Hole.

During our photo workshop, we’ll photograph this amazing landscape from multiple locations.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: MODERATE

It’s going to be very cold! Temperatures can range from -30 F to 30 F. As long as you dress appropriately, you will be just fine. Our group of photographers in the past dressed appropriately, and everyone stayed warm and comfortable. I can email everyone a list of options for clothing and winter gear.

Some of our shooting will be near the snowcoach. While visiting the geyser basins, we’ll need to walk along the designated trails that might be covered with a couple of inches of snow. Most of our shooting areas are flat or slightly graded. We will not climb steep hills or walk on ice.
