Yellowstone National Park & Grand Teton National Park Photo Workshop

Join Lerro Photography for an unforgettable journey as we delve into the breathtaking wilderness and stunning beauty of Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park during the tranquil winter months.

Yellowstone: In winter, access to the majority of the park is limited as most roads are closed to regular vehicles. The most effective way to experience the park during this season is via snow coach or snowmobile. For our exclusive photo workshop, we have arranged for a private snow coach to be at our disposal, allowing for a personalized exploration where we can photograph at our own pace and immerse ourselves in the stunning wildlife and landscapes that captivate our group’s interest. We’ve secured our snow coach for a generous ten hours each day—significantly more than the typical seven-hour commercial tours—ensuring that we have ample time to explore iconic sites and less-visited gems alike. This extra time will enable us to fully appreciate the serene beauty of winter, including the magical moments of sunset in the park, before making our way back to West Yellowstone.

Grand Teton: Very few people venture to this magical place when it is blanketed in Wyoming’s deep snow, and the winter conditions add a moody dimension to these majestic peaks. The stunning Grand Teton soars to 13,775 feet, rising 5,700 feet above the likely frozen Jackson Lake. The park’s iconic bison, elk, and moose will be adorned with a dusting of snow, and as they breathe, the cold air creates a dramatic fog of vapor. Everywhere you look, the park is transformed into a white, tranquil, and scenic wonderland.

I’m excited to share this photographic adventure with you as we explore the magical, peaceful winter scenery.

During our photography workshop, we will capture images in various lighting conditions, including sunrise, midday, sunset, and the blue hour. You will also learn how to navigate the challenges of photographing large wildlife. Additionally, we will cover essential technical aspects, such as how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO impact your photos, and how to adjust your photography techniques and equipment for extremely cold conditions. Pack your jackets, thermals, and lens warmers, and get ready for The Lerro Experience in the breathtaking mountains of Wyoming.

A full day at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone

Our winter Yellowstone adventure will be packed full of wildlife, and we’re going to get started right in town in West Yellowstone. The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center gives a home to bears and wolves that couldn’t survive in the wild for various reasons. It also gives us a great opportunity to get into the groove of shooting animals in the conditions here. We’ll spend the day photographing a number of grizzly bears and two packs of wolves at the preserve. During this session, photographers will learn how to use various autofocus tracking settings and how to have their other camera settings ready. That way, when we are in the park the next few days, everyone will be comfortable with their cameras and ready to get those iconic Yellowstone photos.

Two full days in a Private snow coach in YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

We’ll spend two adventurous days in our private snow coach traveling around Yellowstone in search of wildlife. We contract our private snow coaches for ten hours each day, which allows us to enjoy all of the winter sunlight and head back to West Yellowstone at blue hour. Other tours have to be back by 4:00 PM, and miss out on these fantastic golden hour photos in the park. Our snow coach driver will have the most recent updates on where the wildlife is to get us right where we want to be. While photographing the wildlife, we’ll take in some of the amzing landscape that will surround us.

Some of the wildlife we hope to see include:

  • Coyotes
  • Bison
  • Fox
  • Eagles
  • River Otters
  • Elk
  • Wolves

Areas we will pass through:

  • Hayden Valley
  • Madison River
  • Gibbon Falls
  • Geyser Basin

Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park’s landscape is characterized by the dramatic Teton Range, rising abruptly from Jackson Hole, and shaped by millions of years of geological activity, including tectonic uplift, glacial carving, and erosion.

Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park, famous for its iconic landscape featuring barns against the Teton Range, is a historic district showcasing the settlement of Mormon pioneers in Jackson Hole.

During our photo workshop, we’ll have this amazing landscape as the backdrop to our wildlife photography adventure.

The Wildlife of Grand Teton National Park

During the winter, the wildlife of Grand Teton is still prevalent and active. During our photo workshop, we hope to photograph the following wildlife:

  • Moose
  • Coyotes
  • Bison
  • Eagles
  • Elk
  • Big Horn Sheep

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: MODERATE

It’s going to be very cold! Temperatures can range from -30 F to 30 F. As long as you dress appropriately, you will be just fine. Our group of photographers in the past dressed appropriately, and everyone stayed warm and comfortable. I can email everyone a list of options for clothing and winter gear.

Some of our shooting will be near the snowcoach. While visiting the geyser basins, we’ll need to walk along the designated trails that might be covered with a couple of inches of snow. Most of our shooting areas are flat or slightly graded. We will not climb steep hills or walk on ice.
